I totally get what you mean, I've always felt that with SPN especially, I can be heartbroken about what happens (Abandon All Hope and Hammer of the Gods and the Roadhouse in AHBL I especially) but I can understand why they did it and I have to admire them for the way they all brought it together in the end. Swan Song, I think was a great example of this, emotionally that left me drained, and I don't think I could've handled it had it been the series finale but as storytelling? It did was very strong and it did round off the five seasons well.
