SPN - 5.21 - 'Two Minutes To Midnight' - Insta Reaction/Meta

So I noticed way back in S3, Kripke's habit for completely giving away the finale in mid-season episodes. It was true for Scarecrow and Hunted. Remained true for Malleus Maleficarum. And for Heaven & Hell. So...

SAM: It's over for me. It doesn't have to be for you.
DEAN: No?
SAM: No, you can keep going.
DEAN: Who says I want to?
- 2.09 'Croatoan'

+++++++++

ELLEN comes back to sit by JO. They watch each other for a moment and ELLEN smiles.
JO: Mom, no.
ELLEN: Somebody's gotta let them in. Like you said, you're not moving. You got me, Jo. And you're right, this is important.
ELLEN: But I will not leave you here alone.
- 5.10 'Abandon All Hope'

Dean is totally gonna jump into that hellfire with Sam, isn't he? With the amulet around his neck, after Sam gave it back to him in some sweeping, I know you don't want to see me do this, but have faith in me, speech.

FML, KRIPKE! *facepalm* Whatever, it's gonna be glorious and I'm gonna cry like a baby for a week.

In other news, red leads the way, yo. I just got done yesterday thinking that everyone is underestimating Sam. And that that crazy plan was not the last time we would hear it. And look! A whole episode about it! EVEN DEATH who TURNED ROGUE AGAINST BRATTY-KID LUCIFER thinks he can do it! I've actually been feeling like alot of this season is like a redo for Sam to correct his mistakes of last year and make the right choices with Dean by his side. Same with Dean really.

Also, one quote that's been ringing in my head since last weeks episode: "The righteous man who begins it is the only one who can end it". Raise your hand if you think the angels read that prophecy right, in retrospect? Hey look, they both spilled blood. Dean in Hell torturing souls. Sam on Earth drinking the nurse dry. Even playing ground.

DID I MENTION HOW FLAILY AND TEARY EYED I GOT OVER THE SHOW WAXING POETIC ABOUT HOW SAM TRIES? BECAUSE GUYSSSS. That was my DEVASTATION about how last year turned out for him, and my stubbornness at how it meant something, and hearing that acknowledged, TWICE in one episode, was just the sweetest birthday present EVER. Show, you are coming together way better than I ever willing to give you credit for. [I went to search down my S4 finale spec the other day, which to reread now, heh, I think I was about a year ahead in my spec there. But it does show how remarkably consistent the show has been thematically in its broad strokes which is kinda fascinating to me.]

GOD, Sam Winchester, way to have taken over my brain in the last year, what the hell, right?

Now what I really want to know about is this demon blood mention again. A vessel that wasn't prepared to house Lucifer, sure, it has to down gallons of demon blood. But Sam's had the stuff pumping through his veins since he was six-months old, yo, that has to count for something right? 'You didn't need the feather to fly Dumbo' line from last year's season finale was intentionally placed and I refuse to believe they aren't gonna use it. *is stubborn*

Of course, he could down dead infected Croatoan virus people too, but that won't have the same victory ring to it as gruesome as that might be.

Also, it's RIDICULOUS just how super-intensely FASCINATED I am in no-mojo turning human Cas. I mean SERIOUSLY, THAT'S THE GLIMPSE of the guy who admitted to humanely doubt in 4.07. THAT GUY! I've waited EONS to see that!

And there was so much else, UGH, Bobby and his LEGS! CROWLEY making me giggle like a little girl every five seconds! The EPIC 'O Death' sequence! The metaphoric rings snapping together! AND DEAN'S FACE, CAN WE TALK ABOUT THAT PLEASE??? *WHIBBLES*

I ended off with this last year, but it's more apt now than ever:

“Let‘s not end up like this...”
“Beats dying.”
“Does it?”
“I would do anything for you, you know that. But I WILL NOT WATCH YOU DIE. I‘ll miss that show”
“No. You’ll be there. You‘re always there for me.”

It makes me BAWL every time. Like next Thursday will undoubtedly do.

I kept staring at Sam's red-ish shirt and thinking about you. And Dean's blue one. And the (obviously) poisonous green puke, ew. Okay, I tried really hard not to stare at *that*, but still. And uhm, have you seen the promo pictures of the finale? Because... because...

God, I hope you're right about Dean jumping in with Sam. I need them to be *together*, even if it's like that.

Hee. I did a little jumpy dance when I saw Sam in the red at the Impala moment scene there too. But HA! THE GREEN PUKE! I was so grossed out by it looking so putridly green clayish, I didn't even put that together! Ha! Pestilence had a green car too right? Fabulous.

I've peaked at some pics, but none seemed spoilery. Which ones are you referring to?

God, I hope you're right about Dean jumping in with Sam. I need them to be *together*, even if it's like that.
Well, that's also me assuming we'd have a literal deus ex machina after their jump. You know, God going, YAY, you passed the test! Congrats! You win! Not sure how likely that one is...at the end of this season, at least. Depends on how much Kripke wants us to suffer. But the image of the boys jumping in together, you KNOW that would be SPECTACULAR. And idk, I just felt like that Croatoan face was written all over Dean at the end there. And snapping the rings together like that again, all thinky. IDK! *flaily hands*

It's just, Sam seems to be wearing a blue & red plaid shirt...

But the image of the boys jumping in together, you KNOW that would be SPECTACULAR.

OMG, it would. Please please please, if Sammy's really jumping in then I want that to happen, I can't stand the thought of having them separated again.

I just felt like that Croatoan face was written all over Dean at the end there.

That whole scene in Croatoan is one of my favorites of the show. Dean's love for Sam is so palpable there, it makes me ACHE for them.

Dean made me think about Croatoan recently, too. I don't recall right now which episode it was, but he was telling Sam that he was tired, just like he did in Croatoan.

Unrelated, I was watching a fanvid yesterday and there was that scene with Sam getting into Ruby's (yellow) car, and I went all, "hmmm, was that a clue that she was working to further Azazel's plan?"

OH! OH!!! I totally forgot about that but yes! When I first saw it, I was like, red & blue, looks like Sam's got this one!

Yes! The 100th, Dean and Sam in the first panic room scene. I thought of it too then. Croatoan has been on my mind all season really (and hey it works, with the virus hanging over them too), but right there with you, that whole scene is still a top ten killer of the show for me.

Unrelated, I was watching a fanvid yesterday and there was that scene with Sam getting into Ruby's (yellow) car, and I went all, "hmmm, was that a clue that she was working to further Azazel's plan?"
Ha! Funny, I remember not being able to tell the color in 4.12, and then that last week before the finale, [livejournal.com profile] bellanut had specced that Ruby was duping Sam and Lilith actually was the last seal. And the moment I saw it in broad daylight, I thought, yup, she's right, because of the color! I forgot about that. Makes sense that the pharmaceutical company for the vaccine was all yellow colors as well then, harking back to the YED years too. Nifty!

Hey! I hope you had a good birthday and not just with the SPN treat!

[identity profile] zimshan.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, thanks for the well wishes! :)

[identity profile] harper47.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 11:13 am (UTC)(link)
Interesting theory. Both in hell together? I do believe Sam will be in hell. Because it's his turn and I guess the boys have to do EVERYTHING together. I do agree this season has been a redo for Sam and he is clearly emerging as a hero here. But if they are both in hell where do they go from there? How do you think they get out?

I loved watching the colors and I loved watching Cas. And overall thought this was a very good episode, much better than last week. Death and Pestilence were both MAGNIFICENT. Well cast, well written, well acted. Excellent scenes.

[identity profile] zimshan.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, see that's me assuming that we get a literal deus ex machina by God himself going all, 'Congrats! You passed the test!' right after. So they never REALLY go to Hell. That's the only way I can think any vessel is getting out anyway. I think it'd be overkill to have Sam in there for the whole summer in terms of symmetry or whatever, I think it's alittle too literal.

But I wouldn't put it past Kripke to end on this epic image of them both jumping in and cut to black, and let us suffer for the summer. But I'm crossing my fingers it will be more like the closure of the S2 finale.

But GERRIE! I was TOTALLY FLIPPING OUT over the Cas loosing his mojo stuff! I did not expect that to be on the plate! Which was silly, because the colors told us so. Loved Misha doing the whole shlumbed and leaning on his hand on the furniture there at the beginning at Bobby's? Contrasted so starkly from Cas standing in that room tall and official just three episodes ago.

I was actually surprised they did Pestilence on screen but it was creepy enough I'm glad they did it. And couldn't help but notice: Sam nabbed the first ring. Cas nabbed the third ring. And Dean nabbed the fourth. Go Team Free Will! :)

[identity profile] harper47.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I see. I was confused how you thought they would get out. That makes sense. I would be happy with that as long as Cas survives.

Oh the Rings. I did not see that. You're right. Interesting.

I loved all the Cas scenes (obviously) and it gives me some slight hope he might survive next week. Being human would mean he could stay when the Angel SL is over. But still. I'm still quivering in angst. I just don't know.

I really enjoyed all the Cas/Sam bonding scenes. I wish there were more scenes with Dean and I for sure don't ship Sam and Cas but I like their friendship. I found the van ride very interesting and I'm still mulling over all the comments there. I must admit, I'm a little confused about the demon blood comment. What's your take on that?

And yes, I loved the way Misha changed his body language. He's such a great actor.

I think the everyone underestimating Sam comes back to The Curious Case of Dean Winchester. Exact same scenario. Sam being underestimated and winning. And yea you for being right about Sam.

Do you think Cas will live next week? I'm curious.

[identity profile] zimshan.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm super confused on the demon blood idea as well. [livejournal.com profile] destina made the connection that that might have been why Ruby had to have Sam all juiced up on demon blood at the time, not to kill Lilith but to protect him when Lucifer took his vessel like what was supposed to happen that night. But it makes little sense to me, that he'd have to drink demon blood to do this. It'd feel counter intuitive on the whole redemption front. Why the small bit of demon blood as a baby was needed then anyway? Idk. And then why would Dean be able to contain Michael without it? Unless they purposely brought him back more intact already?

Of course, there's always the fandom idea of Sam drinking angel blood instead too. Who knows.

I think the everyone underestimating Sam comes back to The Curious Case of Dean Winchester. Exact same scenario. Sam being underestimated and winning.
Ah, I was reminded about that last night. When Sam had his 'but I'm all we've got' line. Pushing out the cobwebs, but what'd he do there? Kinda used his weakness over the idea of Dean dying and turning it around on his opponent, right? Seems applicable now.

If there's God interference in the finale (and there was in the premiere so, knowing Kripke...) I'd put money on Cas being safe. No way God's gonna let his most faithful angel die. He didn't before anyway. :)

Hell, I wrote that fic before Sam drank a drop of Ruby's. And then show went, 'Sam's drinking blood,' and I screamed.

[identity profile] zimshan.livejournal.com 2010-05-10 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
Ha! Really? Awesome. I love how many things fandom has done that actually predates canon. Kripke owes fandom royalties! ;)

Ohhh. I hadn't even considered that possibility --- that Dean might jump in there with Sam. In any case, I am so excited for this finale, it's ridiculous.

[identity profile] zimshan.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It just feels like, letting him jump in there alone would just seem beyond wrong...considering this year's thematics, you know?

So ridiculous, I'm basically gonna be a pogo-stick girl for the next week in anticipation!

[identity profile] proofpudding.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Hell, I'd pogo-stick myself into next week if that were at all possible!

You know, I've been thinking about that scene between Ellen and Jo since 5.10. I think I even talked about it in my spam review. It's haunted me ever since.
Oh my. I hadn't even considered the idea of Dean jumping into the cage alongside Sam.
Why this show is breaking my heart so much?
You'll have a hard wekk in front of you, sweetie. You'll have to talk me out of the freak-outs.

*frets more*

[identity profile] zimshan.livejournal.com 2010-05-10 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I originally cried like a NUTJOB during that scene because it felt so exactly like what would be our finale with Sam and Dean. Then, we got word of S6 and I forgot all about it. But Ackles did say Kripke's going through the finale as he saw it for a series finale in the beginning of the season. And the way they ended that last scene, with the rings this episode, I really couldn't think of anything else.

Why this show is breaking my heart so much?
That is the show's MO, after all, right?

ONLY FOUR DAYS OF FRETTING LEFT. Breathe deep, red & blue...

Oh my goodness, Ellen and Jo. ELLEN AND JO. I <3 your brain. Sam and Dean jumping into the pit TOGETHER. OMFG.

It makes sense, it really does. I've never really wanted them going off a cliff together, but worse would be one dying and leaving the other, so if they're going to save the world -- them going out together in the blaze of glory Kripke has often said he wanted to do, that would be pretty awesome. And it's not the end END, because there's S6 so they'll be okay, somehow. Have no idea how but whoa, I love your theory here. And you've been right about other stuff!

[identity profile] zimshan.livejournal.com 2010-05-10 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I watched that final scene with Dean and the rings, and my brain just couldn't get anywhere else. No way I can see Dean standing there and watching Sam jump into the pit alone. Not after this season. Not after Ellen and Jo, and word that Kripke's still completing this episode as if it was the series finale. If Dean's letting Sam do this? He's going with him. *whibbles*

I've never really wanted them going off a cliff together,
I was a pretty big proponent of the blaze of glory for years. Until living through S4. After that, all I wanted was lollipops and rainbows for everyone. Which I'd wager we're probably not getting this Thursday. I never thought I'd say it but thank GOD, we have S6, now! Lollipops and rainbows later! XD

[identity profile] cosmicviolet.livejournal.com 2010-05-10 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe people want Sam to think that he needs to drink lots of demon blood, just to see him feed his addiction? I don't know. Maybe he can find a way around it.

Happy birthday, btw! I know I'm a few days late. Hope it was a good one. :)

[identity profile] ash48.livejournal.com 2010-05-11 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Dean jumping in with Sam would make my friggin' day! Just the... "guh* of it all...

And because we know there's a season 6 I would totally be up for it ending that way. I mean, come on! It's makes sense. S2 ending in Sam's death, S3 ending in Dean's... S5 could totally end with them BOTH dying... together!

Imagine the fic that would come out of that?! We'd have a whole hiatus to ponder over where they are before they are brought back to earth.

Hee! Can you tell I'm all excited for the finale...\o/

Oh and YES to all of this re 5.21. I especially loved that this is the Cas that is in The End. I love how it all looks like it's heading toward that future. Very clever.

Not long to wait now... \o/

This is very perplexing to me as well!

All I've been able to come up with so far is that whatever the purpose of the demon blood, it was created by Lucifer, so it has to serve his purposes more than anything else. I don't think there's a chance of Sam in anyway using the blood to his advantage. It has to be designed to make him more suitable for Lucifer (likely physically a stronger vessel, but weaker-willed if anything).

I expanded on it a bit here: http://monicawoe.livejournal.com/12327.html

I hope so. I'm really okay with that as long as they're together! (And as long as Bobby takes care of the Impala.)
